Live tributes to the departed greats are now the lifeblood of the mainstream circuit, which is doubtless why jazz is now a classical music. The more thorny question of whether one should preserve such gigs in album form seems to have long been decided in favour of doing just that. This concert, though not without its minor problems, is one of the successes and perhaps benefits from narrowing its focus since, though not advertised as such, its six tracks are all versions of pieces from the famous Mingus Ah Um – only ‘Bird Calls’, ‘Pussy Cat Dues’ and ‘Open Letter To Duke’ are missing. The arrangements by co-leaders Breinschmid and Lindgren are close to the originals but not slavishly so and, while the addition of trumpet seems more conventional, Schriefl is sufficiently idiosyncratic to add rather than detract. It’s an advantage that none of the pieces are taken too fast and a bonus is vocalist Bertault, who sings her own words (in French) to ‘Pork Pie Hat’ and ‘Self-Portrait In Three Colors’, while scatting in the front-line exchanges on ‘Better Git It In Your Soul’. None of the instrumentalists is over-dominant but, when taking solos, Austrian-born Breinschmid is an impressive bass player.
