Saxophonists who have connections with the jazz-rock band Steely Dan make an impressive list: Michael Brecker, Phil Woods, Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter, Pete Christlieb, Chris Potter… Sure, most of them have been studio soloists, rather than also touring musicians with the band, which is why, while Walt Weiskopf deserves to be added to that list, we should not lift our expectations too high. Weiskopf is a solid New York journeyman and the sessions he leads – this is his fourth on the Posi-Tone label – are filled with strong playing from both the tenor player and his band members. But there is the sense of busy freelancers given a set of charts – some original, some standards – and some limited studio hours squeezed into their gigging downtime. The originals include a blues and some fast hard bop; the standards include a reflective ‘Young And Foolish’ and a relaxing ‘How Are Things In Glocca Morra?’. Should you happen to step into a Manhattan club and find this band on the stand, you'd have a pleasant evening, I'm sure. A CD needs more substance and originality to reward repeated listening.
