Building on 2011's Duo, Wesseltoft and Schwarz create a piano trio with the addition of former EST bassist Dan Berglund. But this isn't a ‘piano trio’ in the traditional sense since the drummer's role is taken care of by Henrik Schwarz's laptop. This small step provides reassuring evidence that we are listening to jazz in the 21st century and not the mid-20th century; add to that Berglund's accomplished use of electronics that can make his instrument sing like an angel or rattle the window frames with heavy metal blasts and we are in sonic territory that remains virtually unexplored in jazz. This is electronic free jazz, since most of the tracks rely on spontaneous interaction with the exception of ‘Movement Eleven’ and ‘Movement Seventeen’, which are recorded with four musicians from the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. This is where it gets interesting, betraying higher artistic ambition while simultaneously pushing the envelope. It is a trio with great potential and it is this promise of great things to come, a three star rating seems appropriate as they knock on the door of four stars and more.
