There were three stars of tonight’s show at the Jazz Cafe in Camden: saxophonist Bill Evans’ serpentine solos that floated like the proverbial butterfly but stung like a bee; guitarist Bryan Baker’s truly head, ear and eye-popping solos; and the Jazz Cafe’s newly installed sound system that produced a wall of sound as muscular and clear as the music being dished up by these US monsters.
A previously unreleased Chet Baker recording, Live In London, taped during a six-night stint at the now long-gone Covent Garden jazz venue, The Canteen, in 1983, is set for release on 28 October on the Ubuntu Music label.

Electro-jazz trio The Comet Is Coming, who feature saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, keyboardist Dan Leavers and drummer Maxwell Hallett, have been nominated for the Hyundai Mercury Music Prize for their album Channel The Spirits, on a strong and eclectic list.
